The design of fire and gas detection systems for process plants and offshore oil & gas installations has taken a new dimensions in the last decade. Locations of F&G detectors are optimised using three-dimensional fire and gas dispersion models. Arriscar provides services to optimise and verify the placement of F&G detectors using performance targets.

Gas dispersion is analysed using either a simple model with gas cloud assessed in 3 dimensions, or a computational fluid dynamic model. Gas detectors are located by superimposing the flammable cloud on a 3-D model of the plant.

Flame geometries and thermal radiation envelopes are superimposed on the 3-D model, and assessed against the “cone of vision” provided by the vendor for the specific detector.

The F&G study is undertaken at any stage of the facility life cycle, but more often at the design stage, or during a major extension to the facility.
